It’s been a mystery for many I think Karen. Often these little dwarf Iris have a habit of shattering into many tiny bulblets after one season, which eiither die or rot off as they are too small to produce a flower the following year. Trying to keep them happy in exactly the right soil has been a real challenge for me. I stopped buying new ones for now as it was proving costly to keep replacing them. I now just look after what’s left and hope they grow bigger eventually @KOutdoors

That sounds about right Elise! 😆😆 even I have my limits though. I’ve already stopped buying new ones for now. @Auricula

Thanks! It looks much bluer in the photo, prob more violet to the naked eye. Nice to see it finally return 🤗 @juliesgarden @pelly @islima

Thanks Nicola 😄 - I love them, and there was a time I was truly obsessed with them. But I can’t figure out how to keep them year on year and it was getting a bit disheartening. I need a proper old fashioned rockery I think, one day perhaps @nix81

I think some are better than others. Katharine Hodgkin and Harmony are fairly reliable. Others not always so! Although I really think it depends on your soil @KOutdoors

Quite well draining, probably poorish. I think the secret relates to the watering. They should be completely dry during summer and autumn. Plenty of water in spring. In the wild they live on mountains with no rain in summer/cold dry winters and then snow, which melts providing the water in spring @KOutdoors

The flowers have a much better shape than last year. I found they didn't unfold fully and didn't quite make it, but this year that has all changed 👍🏼👌🏼💜 #Iris #iris-histrioides #irishistrioidespalmspring

Iris histrioides 'Palm Spring' - had only a couple of bulbs purchased from a show last year, and pleased I've got a few more flowers this year 💜😊 #Iris #Iris-histrioides #irishistrioidespalmspring

Well, these look like the ones I've marked as 'Harmony' 😂😂 My Harmony were blue the first year after planting and then they turned violet in the second year and stayed that way.

Oh, I vaguely remember you mentioned before there was a difference in when the leaves start to appear between reticulata and histrioides. Do you remember what it was?

richard.spicer.7906

Was it histrioides has flowers first then foliage... ? Reticulata you see the foliage first then flower? Sounds right when you look at some, but I don’t know if it’s an absolute rule @ublaszko

Ok. I'll just stick with what you said and put them under 'Pixie'... Which means now I have to buy 'Palm Springs' next year or of curiosity 😆😆 I think M&S sells 'Palm Springs' bulbs in autumn.
