26/05/19 - planted these quite late, but they should be fine. I’ll be honest, no idea how to grow and keep Ixia over winter but did some research, they like apparently quite well draining soil and they originate from South African and grow during winter rainfall periods. So I’ll try growing them like my winter species gladioli. Ideally they would be flowering now, and then they go summer dormant. So will have to hope this grows quickly and then protect it from rain in the polytunnel of the....
latter part of summer and then restart watering again in the autumn. I’ve used a mix of 50% gravel, 25% coarse sand and 25% John Innes no. 3 soil #ixia #ixiayellowemperor #cornlily #corm - and to clarify the winter rainfall part, I don’t think they would do well in uk winter wet, hence why I’ll keep them under cover and control the watering myself.
Yes, I’d heard poor soil was a good thing for these. Well I can’t say they are gonna get much nutrition from my soil mix so hopefully I can replicate that. I’ve split them into two batches so I’ll plant half in the garden in the autumn and see what happens. Thanks Julie 🙏🏼😊 @vec
These didn’t grow at all last year, not even a leaf, but they seem to be now! #ixia #ixiayellowemperor
