Another Lily has popped open, ‘Gizmo’ - not as tall this year but to be honest I’m just grateful I’ve succeeded in avoiding the worst of Lily beetle. I kept these quarantined in the polytunnel to hide the scent and waited till the breeding season was over (although they are my Fritillaries instead 🙄) and then put the Lily pots outside about six weeks ago and they have so far been fine. The odd one appears but I think they just take a nibble and then go #lily #lilium

Beautiful, mine are outside and I’ve squished quite a few beetles! Only lost a few leaves to the lavae by being fairly vigilant.

I found a couple more this evening Joan, but I think it’s gonna be fine now. No signs of eggs now @joanboston

Thanks everyone - I have to say it was never my thing to have white, but it’s grown on me the last couple of years. And actually it’s not completely white as it has the yellow stripe in the centre of each petal @rachelbrooks @cyndi @kathy @juliesgarden @greenhouse @kez001uk

White is my favourite. I always wanted a white garden. I did plant a white bed in our old garden

I forgot to post the bulbs of these lilies when I bought them in February at the RHS Early London show. But they are blooming now - and boy are they huge! These flowers are about 25cm across!! 😳 quite tall too. They are longiflorum x oriental hybrid. I recall Monty Don planted a few of these too. Mine have suffered a bit with Scarlet Lily Beetle and haven't been around much to control them. But they still look great 👍🏼 #lily #lilium #lilium-longiflorum #liliumlongiflorumxorientalgizmo

It looks lovely! So the red lily beetle is terrible here. And I hate the use of pesticides in the garden but I've had good success with permethrin with a long acting dessicant - like a spray for spiders. I only spray once a month and only the basal leaves. Or you manually pick them daily and throw them in a bucket of soapy water.

Yes, same as me - hate to use chemicals. Haven't done so now for a few years. For now, if I see one I'll pick it off and put in the waste bin. I read something recently about potentially using Garlic juice spray (Crushed/mashed garlic mixed with water) and spray on the foliage. Haven't tried it yet, but worth a go perhaps? @MelanieAt

Is that a bad thing @richard.spicer.7906 ? As an American politician put it (can't remember his name, but he was pretty awful, lol): they never knew what hit them. Or something along those lines. I'm not suggesting I'm like him. LOL
