10/06/19 - propagation updates - Some Mahonia cultivars have very short spaces between nodes on the stem, which makes taking normal cuttings quite difficult. So in this case - for Mahonia x media 'Charity' - you can use a technique involving Leaf Bud cuttings. This is done when material is scarce. Using semi-ripe stems, you cut just above a dormant leaf bud, and then cut a couple of centimetres below the bud (but also below a node)
and then shorten the leaf by a half (which on this one is extremely sharp 😖) The cutting and the tiny bit of stem are then potted up in a well draining cuttings mix, 50% peat and 50% grit in this case as perlite would not give me the right stability for these particular heavy cuttings. You can see as well they are planted at an angle so that the leaf extends vertically up, this just helps support the cutting and makes it more practical for them to fit in the tray 👍🏼
Just out of shot unfortunately but the dormant buds start to wake up and as the cutting starts to root the bud will grow away. These were taken in May and the buds are already growing, middle left one you can just see the fresh new foliage appearing 😊
😄 you would think Sherri, it looks very similar and just as spiteful when you touch it 😂 - I didn’t know, but just checked and it’s in berberis Family apparently 🤔 @sherrisgarden
