Another cactus repotted - i missed her flowering this year so I think it was time to start giving her some attention. Not sure of her age, but I think she's got to be over 20 years old I reckon, maybe much more. Used a mix of soil (John Innes no.3), multipurpose compost, silver sand and Horticultural grit 👍🏼 #cactus #mammillaria #mammillaria-hahniana #mammillariahahniana #oldladycactus
Morning, may seem silly but do all cacti flower? When would you suggest repotting ie what are the signs to look for, last question - would you use this soil mix for cacti in the home? I have some cacti which have never flowered and lost 2 whilst on holiday 😕 thanks
Morning Franca - good questions, not sure I have all the answers but will give it a go 😀. 1) flowering, depends on cactus but quite a few of these ones in the Mammillaria group would, even when they are a bit smaller. I know mine has flowered before each year but I either missed it or it didn't this year @titchyfra
2) I've repotted now but should be during the 'active' period. Prob best not to do it during winter. Also, spring is the general rule but think for most it's probably ok as long as not too late in year.
3) typically when roots start to come through pot is sign - but can be other reasons - every 3 years is a good guide. Mine haven't been repotted in over 10 years 😳 so the current soil mix is probably quite old, condition, with little nutrition. Only put into a bigger pot if it outgrew the previous one 👍🏼
4) soil mix - always. Mine are actually kept indoors too but just put it outside for the day to enjoy some sun ☀️😊 @titchyfra
Thanks @richard.spicer.7906 for your advice and knowledge I really don't do or know a lot about them, just water them. May leave till next year to repot , thank you 🙌
No probs Franca 😊👍🏼🙌🏼 @titchyfra
@richard.spicer.7906 How deep can I plant them. My cacti always fall over and out the pots. Roots look shocking but they're all still around. I keep trying. Any suggestions?
Hi @diannezchilds - I wouldn't plant them deeper than the level they already are, but perhaps what you could do is get a wider pot. Shallow and a bit wider. That might help stabilise it perhaps?

Here is another one - not quite as confident on this one but very old that's for sure. And very heavy! 😳 You can see in comparison to an every cup on the size of width of it. It has never produced offsets or branches, but it does flower every spring - usually tiny pink flowers. My wild guess is potentially Mammillaria hahniana (otherwise known as Old Lady Cactus) - any thoughts on this one for an ID? #cactus #plantid #plantid-cactus
I was going to suggest a type of mamillaria but that's as far as I can go. :(
I agree Richard it does look like Mammillaria Hahniana 🌵
Looks good. I too agree.
Thanks everyone, I used to have a fair bit of knowledge on cacti but it's been a few years and I've forgotten most of it now. I've gone with Mammillaria hahniana, and will post pics when it starts to flower again 😊👍🏼 @MelanieAt @mrsflowerpot @lovestogarden

Leaning tower of Pisa in the polytunnel 🤔😂 she always looks drunk, I straighten her each time I repot and she still leans. I turn the pot every couple of weeks too 🤷🏼♂️ she is very old though - hopefully will see some flowers in the spring 🤞🏼 #cactus #mammillaria #mammillaria-hahniana #mammillariahahniana #oldladycactus
Oh no 🤭 hope it was ok. I inherited this one not much smaller than it is now about 10 years ago, and it was always indoors on a sunny windowsill. But last year I put it outside around May time and it’s been there ever since, although over winter I keep it in the tunnel with a fleece on frosty nights. It’s always looked this fuzzy since I got it so. It’s swollen up well in the last twelve months two @dirtgirlworld
Tell her I look forward to seeing it 😊 @dirtgirlworld
That's what happens to use as we age 😁😁
