15/03/19 - Star Plant Update - here’s a flower pic to get you over me spamming you all with graft pics (sorry 🙄) - Muscari species, with very puffy flowers 💙 - Muscari azureum is what it’s often sold as, although apparently taxonomists have it placed in a different genus called Pseudomuscari #muscari #muscari-azureum #psuedomuscari #azuregrapehyacinth #pseudomuscari-azureum
They look so pretty! 💙

Not sure which is the correct name for this, as the RHS website can be quite behind when plants get renamed. Some websites suggest actually its Pseudomuscari and that Muscari is the synonym. Anyways, trying this for the first time this year. I’m not using too rich a soil as I noticed this seems to cause quite a lot of foliage production #bulbs #bulb #pseudomuscari #pseudomuscari-azureum #muscari #muscari-azureum #azuregrapehyacinth
How deep will you plant these?
Hi Alison, I’ve planted them about 3 inches deep 😊👍🏼 - it’s a relatively shallow pot too @bluefox23
Ok, thanks 😊 Are all of those in that 1 pot?
Yep - 10 in a wideish shallow pot. I've planted up to 15-20 in these pots before and they have been fine @bluefox23 - I'll check the pot size tomorrow for you as I've forgotten the exact size. Will need to look on the side of pot in daylight.
Brilliant! Thank You! I might have to redo my plan!! 😂😂
I found the same thing with muscari leaves. They looked dreadful when I had them growing in the ground and really messy with long strappy leaves. I moved them in pots last year and they had nice upright leaves and lots of flowers. So much easier to bend over and smell them as well 😁😁
Alison, I'd use at least 10 bulbs in a small pot and if you're using a larger pot you can plant them in groups of 10. 😊 I found that 7 bulbs is a minimum to make colour visible and I only have a small garden so usually look at them up close. 👍 @bluefox23
@ublaszko it's so confusing as the packets and info I've read online says space bulbs a few inches apart!! And yet now, if I think about the ready grown pots of tulips and hyacinths I bought, they are more closely together!! 🤷♀️ 😔
I plant bulbs more closely because I repot them and divide them every year. I think the spacings on labels are more important if you're planning to leave bulbs to naturalise because they need space to mutiply. I know Monty plants his bulbs much more closely in pots. @bluefox23
Some of the pots are starting to flower now too - this particular species has a wonderful sky blue colouring and quite large flowers 💙 #pseudomuscari #pseudomuscari-azureum #muscari-azureum #muscariazureum #azuregrapehyacinth
Mmmmmmm, #trueblue
