Close up of the flower stem. It's about a metre tall with a few smaller flowering branches starting to appear #watsonia #watsonia-laccata #buglelily #wintersouthafricanbulbs

My single bulb of the winter flowering Watsonia laccata is finally in flower 😀 - turns out it was the pink form though rather than orange form. I'm not complaining though, still looks great 👌🏼😊 - I'm sure it's about two months late as it should have been in flower around March/April time. Perhaps if I'd had it in a greenhouse it may have been on time. It's been in and out of the growhouse instead as I was testing its hardiness #watsonia #watsonia-laccata #buglelily #wintersouthafricanbulbs

Very excited that this single bulb of Watsonia laccata is about to flower. I bought it in 2015, and the plant is originally from South Africa. It grows during the winter season, where it takes advantage of the rainfall, then goes into complete dormancy during the summer and needs complete dryness. It's my second year growing this, and first year it's flowered 👏🏼👏🏼😬 #watsonia #watsonia-laccata #buglelily

@nessas - sure, just tagged you. I'm currently growing it in a small pot that I can move around as and when. I don't think it would survive the winter unfortunately fully outside but I've been moving it in and out when the temperature doesn't go below 3-5 degrees just to be safe. And when it was due frost.... 👍🏼

Another winter flowering South African bulb I've been trying - Watsonia laccata. Second year, didn't do anything last winter but seems a bigger stronger specimen this time round. Fingers crossed it might flower. As with the other SA bulb I just posted, this will flower early spring, and needs complete summer dormancy #watsonia

.....however, I planted the bulb in the centre of the pot, level and straight up, but the leaves are coming out at a very strange angle right at the edge. I think I may have planted the bulb upside down 😳 - I may have to come up with some creative staking in a few weeks.

@richard.spicer.7906 @debs69 @krishnahairdo Bonjour I've been meaning to post this apologies it was on my to do list 🤔📝Which way up!! With most flower bulbs, it is quite obvious which end is the top (because it is often pointed with a growing tip) and which is the base (because it is usually flat with evidence of roots). However, with a few types, it can be a little harder to tell. If in doubt, plant them on their sides and they will do just fine. 💐🙃

Trying another South African winter bulb - this one is a Watsonia. It has lovely peachy orange flowers in around April time. I've planted it in a pot on the front porch, where I hope it will be protected by the frosts.....
