They are more of a bush. But there are plenty of everygreen plants that spread on a lower level. I used to have a Ceanothus that I used in my last house.

Soil very dry
Yes it would but like any plant you have to be patient for growth. I would use 3. Prune as needed.
There many shade loving plants that can go under trees. Have a look on Google.
