Beautiful! I'm usually so slow about getting plants out of the grower's peat that they die before getting repotted half the time. 😆🤦🏻‍♀️ What's your soil mix?

@beatnikcrab I try to aim for about 30 to 40% of the mix being organic material and I use coconut Coir, The remaining portions are either an equal mix of horticultural pumice and red lava or a mix of ½ pumice, ¼ red lava fines/sand and the other ¼ being the red lava pieces

Oo, where do you get your lava pebbles?? The previous owner of my house was a plant guy, and he left behind a couple giant pots of soil amended with the stuff, and it's AMAZING, but I've never been able to find it for sale! I tried getting some larger lava gravel and crushing it, but it just turns to dust. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Pumice and horticultural charcoal are my go-to grits, plus I screen the wood bits and pebbles out of storebought succulent soil and use that. Also coco coir for the organic component.

@beatnikcrab sorry just saw your comment. I get it from a rock and soil place. It’s mostly for landscapers and they sell slab rock for granite counters and such. It’s called American Soil and Stone in Richmond, CA if you wanna look for reference to maybe find a similar place.

No worries! Wow, that's a really specific source! Hmm, I'm going to have to source some landscape gravel soon anyways, so I'll check the suppliers to see if they have something similar as well. Thanks for the tip! I wouldn't have thought of it! ✌️😁

@beatnikcrab yeah my boyfriends actually the one who told me about it he gets all of his rock for bonsai‘s from places like that but just make sure that they have it sorted by size I think we use 5/16 of an inch or something like that if they had smaller I took a little smaller but that’s about as small as I get before it’s lava fines which is basically lava sand with some rock in it but most places like Home Depot just have bigger lava rock

Nice!! *taking notes* Thanks for all the info! I will def see if I can find some. 🔍🤔 When I re-pot plants that have lava pebbles in the soil the roots are always clinging to the pebbles, so they must love it. I've also used expanded clay pellets, and they do the same with that.
