I have mostly houseplants and cacti. I'm a beginner doing constant research, trying not to kill anything. USDA zones 8a and 8b.

Kikiriki has changed A LOT over the past year. He got real tall, then started bending over. Are those really skinny areas due to underwatering? He gets plenty of sun now, but he was stretched like this before he got the light he deserved. His skin is mostly orange/red now. Is sun stress okay for this guy? #cactus-advice #advice #peanutcactus #chamaelobivia #hanging-cactus #kikiriki #update #chamaelobivia-tigerstripe

@emch Thanks! I got it from the mug section at Walmart and drilled a hole in it. 👍

Lack of water generally makes cacti grow slower, but not skinnier. The skinny areas were probably caused by lack of light. Sun stress is totally okay, but may (or may not) slow growth and/or reduce blooming. Have you seen this guy bloom? He looks and sounds like a chamaelobivia (hybrid of chamaecereus and lobivia) to me. Chamaecereus is usually smaller & floppier, and doesn't have this much difference in diameter between the parent stem and the pups. 🤔 Just a thought!

As far as I know chamaecereus only comes with red-orange flowers, while chamaelobivia comes in many colors.

In celebration of Kikiriki's feature, I dug through my archives and found one more, better picture of his flower this year. I'm so proud of him for doing so well both before and after his blooming season. #succulent-sunday #crazy-cacti #peanut-cactus #flowering-cacti

@beatnikcrab This is his flower. Way back before he started hanging. What do you think?

Omg, duh, I never think to just swipe over for older pics. 🤦🏻‍♀️ IT'S GORGEOUS! 😍😍😍 I've never even seen a bicolor one like that! 😳 I think it's definitely not a chamaecereus, tho, he's way too thicc. Lemme see if I can match the flower... 🤔

I think I found it?? https://amp.reddit.com/r/cactus/comments/cksliq/this_plant_is_being_sold_as_rose_quartz_youve/ That post has a link to the patent, which has better photos, although they're b&w.

I also found a pic or two by searching "chamaelobivia mardi gras." Apparently chamaecereus has been reclassified as echinopsis. Stupid fickle taxonomy. 😒

This is Kikiriki, my Peanut Cactus. When he flowered this year, the solitary flower was yellow and orange. He's grown about 4 in. since then.
