Part of the trouble is the high contrast in light. Do you have a blank interior wall or door you could photograph them in front of?

I do, @brightcolours, on top of the chest freezer - and several get photo shoots there. In all honesty, I think that the camera is also at fault, as it cannot focus to scan barcodes either. I need to take my phone apart, clean it, and put it back together. But for now... Photoshoots on the freezer!
