That's a shame Joan. I've found they like drier soils but they can be a bit temperamental until they're established. I've lost a couple in my garden too.
The key is to make sure the roots have plenty of drainage. Try digging in some horticultural grit in the planting hole to encourage free draining. A mulch over the winter can also help
