Tell me about your Koi pond. I’ve been wanting to instal one at my house for years.

yes i would like to share my experience with my koi pond. what do you want to know Rachel @Racheltheredhead?. The point of koi pond is water quality, so depends on the filter works, and my filter is more simple and cheaper than you think, but useful..

I have a large spot mapped out for mine. Approximately 4 feet by 12 feet. What should I buy or make first?

Im so sorry @Racheltheredhead late respond about this. So first thing you might to consider about is: 1. Measure the pond design for, basically if you just want your koi just for fun, its might you no need to concern about deep of the pond. But if you want grow your koi and get big, you might concern about you Koi Pond, its will be good 80cm deep at least for best growing.

2. Water Quality, the heart of the Koi Pond and the health of the Koi is in the water quality. So its a must for Koi keeping is Water Filtering System. (Filtering position and filter system content on the chamber). Filter position is need to consider about the water-flow system. Filter content is depends on your budget. FYI my filter is more cheap than you think, because its 80% contain straw for active bacteria house. @Racheltheredhead

So in this section you need to consider about; Koi Pond Waste Processing, Biological Cycle, Flush System. The simplest flow is kind like this; Koi Pond --> water pump --> Chamber 1st reduce the raw material --> chamber 2nd is bacteria house --> back to the pond. @Racheltheredhead

3. Please consider for 1 month after koi pond build finished, at least please fill just water without Koi, and add some Zeolit Stone (may be something else similar function) for reduce the poisoning material from the new koi pond materials. Please detect by algae growth on your pond, if they grow better, its seems your koi pond is ready to fill with Koi fish. @Racheltheredhead

4. Oxygen. Air-pump (airflow system) for Koi to get the much oxygen for health. Thats all for the whole start to the best practice for Koi Pond.
