Advice please, this is its first season after planting in March. Lovely blooms but should I prune now after spent flowers. Im led to believe Group 1 in first season require hard prune in late spring . Just a bit nervous to do and advice from GTers would go a long way, thanks. #advice
I have two that I put in last year, one I really cut back August and it's beautiful, didnt touch the other, it's not half as good, my advice cut down in August/Sept Mark
Thanks for the advice Jayne @jaynehynesburton . 📝 down.
👍
I hate to disagree with Jayne 🙃 but you don’t normally prune group 1 clematis and if you do and you cut back too much you can kill them. You will also miss our on a second flush. Take a look at Taylor’s website. Loads of info https://www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/clematis-by_pruning/ @jaynehynesburton
Thanks for the link Jacqueline, certainly explains all I need to know going forward. I have a number of clematis in my garden including Group 2/3s @awomanonabike
I just say Jacq what I have done and what worked for me 😊 @awomanonabike
Since I posted i have read conflicting 💡 on how to prune first season clematis which all mine are but thanks both for the info, I'm desperate these plants do well for me. @awomanonabike @jaynehynesburton
Was yours a montana Jayne? 🤔 I do give mine a trim (if I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to get out of the house!) but not al the way down. The only ones I’d do that too are group 3, like viticella 🤔🤔🤔 @jaynehynesburton
Oh no Jacq not all the way down, didnt mean that. Yes mine is Montana Rubens, just chopped it to about 3ft @awomanonabike
Just found this https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/beginners-guide/pruning-plants/pruning-clematis “unless the plant already has 3 or 4 healthy stems...prune all newly planted C back hard the first spring after planting” This could explain our different advice Jayne? @jaynehynesburton
That makes more sense Jayne. I do cut my viticella down to about a foot though and it loves me for it 😬😍 @jaynehynesburton
