With the 5-gallon bucket on top to keep the rain out, the wrapped-up #fig now looks more like its true size. The bucket is wedged down over the #tarp, which mostly fills the volume of the #bucket, so now I'm wondering if there will be enough airflow to keep mold from growing. And whether a strong wind will topple the whole thing over. It's my first #experiment with wrapping an in-ground #figtree #wishmeluck 16 Dec 2023 #ficuscarica

This photo makes this thing look 6 feet tall, but it's a tarp folded in half and wrapped around some 3-foot bamboo stakes. After much pondering, I decided to go on and wrap my #fig-redsicilian even though it's 51°F today. Ross Raddi, the Philly Fig Boss has this whole blog post about not wrapping your figs when it's too warm or too wet, because you don't want them to bake or mold. It's forecasted to only go down to 24°F while we're gone so it's *possible* that it might survive without wrapping, but when I looked up Red Sicilian, Google said it's for zones 8-10 and that wrapping in zone 6 and 7 is strongly encouraged

I'm leaving for Florida in two days, and tomorrow we're getting a big rainstorm, so wrapping has to be today. If it bakes or molds I'll just start over next year. It's about 2 feet tall. 16 Dec 2023 #fig #figtree #ficuscarica #bamboostakes

#fig-redsicilian has put out a third figlet. It's about a foot tall now. Leaves show clear signs of #figmosaicvirus but I've heard it won't kill the plant or affect the fruit. I killed my Palermo red fig cutting and decided to go for an already-rooted cutting for my second attempt.
