Can you eat this ?

Yes! These are shiitake mushrooms that are often in Japanese/Chinese food. I bought the spawn last fall and inoculated some logs and this is the first time the mushrooms have appeared. @charlotte

How did you 'inoculate '?

@lesliecole49 I bought some wooden dowel plugs that already had the shiitake mycelium on them (www.fieldforest.net) and then drilled holes in the logs and hammered in the plugs. There's a beginner's kit that has everything you need, but you have to get your own logs.

Finally finished plugging my last #shiitake #log and stapled on the aluminum tag. I also forgot that I needed to water the logs quite a bit after inoculating, so I dunked them back in the water overnight. Hope that wasn't too much water. Guess we'll see. #experiment #wood 24 Oct 2021

@columbiariver I ordered the small kit from www.fieldforest.net and yes it was plug spawn. It came with the drill bit and wax and was really easy. Would definitely recommend. Hardest part for me was coming up with the oak logs.

All done! Smeared the wax over the end of the dowel to seal in the moisture. The wax was the consistency of lip balm and was simple to use. Step 3: hammer the small dowels that have the mushroom spawn into the holes in the logs. The #kit came with everything I needed: the drill bit, a collar to limit the depth of the holes, wax that I can just scoop out with my finger (no need to melt it!) to cover up the dowels and seal in the moisture.
