I am so fascinated at how different the baby leaves' pattern is from the outer leaves. I've seen pictures of the "top red" variety, and they have a blotchy red and white/gray pattern, and not the uniform red surface like the outer leaves have. Where are these found.

@schr In the wild they come from South Africa and Namibia. If you're looking to buy some, you can sometimes find them at Lowe's or home depot, but they sell out fast so you'll have to stalk their succulent deliveries to get there first. Otherwise I can recommend some growers that do mail order. Most of the lithops plants I have I ordered and had shipped to me because Lowe's and HD seem to have a limited variety.

@lewis8232 They are pretty complicated little guys. They like gritty gravely soil and very little water. There's no good rule for how often to water because it depends on your climate. I'm just a beginner so I make a lot of mistakes. Don't fall in love with the first one you buy, because everyone kills a few getting used to how they need to be cared for. I've killed 5 so far. But they're wonderful and I love them. There's a FB group called Love Lithops that has lots of experienced growers.

The #muppetmouth at the bottom of the shot looks plumper now that he's had a drink (yesterday, 25 Apr 2018, 15 mins bottom-watered with rainwater). He'd seemed to have stalled in his absorption of outer leaves, but now he looks nice and plump. The orange tic-tac at the top right seems like he's cracking a little bit more, and the #lithops-pseudo-dendritica-pulmo-c071 is happy in the sun, having changed leaves back in Feb/Mar.

I fear Dr. Bunsen Honeydew does not have many more days with us. When I received him in the mail, I noticed that his roots were not growing directly out of the bottom of the plant (6 o'clock) but instead were growing kind of out to the side (5 o'clock). I didn't take a picture that day and I SO WISH I had. I have since learned from @ashleyglassman that this unusual root position could indicate that the meristem is not what is making the roots, which means that when these outer leaves die away,

that will be the end of Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. If and when this comes to pass, I will share a photo of his sad demise so that we all know what to look out for and if we ever get a lithops with defective roots we will know to ask for a refund or replacement. #lithops-aucampiae #lithops #livingstones #pumice #succulents #afternoonsun

These sweet babies arrived with their two red brothers on 22 January 2018. #lithopskarasmontanacvlateritia is the smallest "orange top" at 9mm wide. The orangy-peachy one is also 9mm wide, and I have no guesses on species until he gets his new leaves. He was a lot more orange before his adventure in the mail. #lithopskarasmontanamickbergensis "red top" is the reddish one at the bottom, and he's 12mm wide. These are all smaller than a dime. I bought little ones so I could watch them grow up.
