Last step of this #lithops intervention: some #pumicetherapy -- actually this is #grittymix therapy because I ran out of pumice fines. I'm leaving this 2" pot in a small dish of water so that the soil mix wicks up the water. DO NOT DO THIS WITH HEALTHY LITHOPS. This is a last-ditch effort to save a horribly underwatered plant. A healthy lithops would burst itself given this much moisture. Plus we're having a 100°F heat wave in the USA, and this water will be evaporated by evening. 21 Jul 2019

To give this #lithopsleslieisspburchellii a quicker recovery, I picked off some of the cork material that covers the living white #root tissue. (I used to use tiny scissors, but now I do it just with my thumbnail.) The white roots can more easily sense the moisture in the soil if they don't always have to pierce through the cork. This is unfortunate. I'd wondered why this guy remained so small, and when I unpotted the group of six #mesagarden #lithops I discovered the reason why: the roots have not thrived. All is not lost, however. This happened. 👎😭 Stephen Hammer's book says DON'T MOVE YOUR LITHOPS because the pot-jostling makes their roots loose. I of course move my pots almost every day (to take photos) and tonight I bumped this pot and he just popped right out of the pumice. POP! This is new since last night: proof that I didn't damage it too bad earlier this year when I let it get so dried out. There are still some shallow wrinkles left on the side, but it made new leaves anyway. Yay! #lithops change so slowly in little but noticeable increments. @kimguy it's not something you do routinely. I was trying to pull off a dried up old leaf and the whole plant came right out of the soil -- which revealed that the roots had barely grown at all since I got it in February (5 months ago).

@kimguy Lithops grow a kind of corky covering around the white root tissue, and if you don't trim that back it can be hard for the living roots to find the water. After reading a bit more I found out that it's a good idea to trim roots if they're dry and crusty after being bare root shipped (which mine were).

@kimguy But I didn't know about the root-trimming thing in February, so when it popped out of the soil the other week I finally realized what was going on. @ashleyglassman has a lot of videos about lithops on her YouTube channel, which is how I learned about trimming roots.

@AdamMoreno this is straight pumice. I bought these plants, so they were pretty well established so I put them in pumice. The grains were probably a little too big though. Always learning.

@plants my advice for lithops is to read about them for a month or two before before spending money

I've been worried about this guy because he started splitting and then just.... stopped. I thought maybe his roots never recovered?
