I finally separated the six #umbrellamagnolia into individual 14" tall treepots. Their roots were tangled together and growing out of the drainage holes so I ended up bare rooting them to get them apart. This one is roommates with a pawpaw and a persimmon. 1 Aug 2023 #magnoliatripetala #fromseed #grownfromseed #native

#magnoliatripetala looking a lot better now. I absolutely must separate them into their own treepots this fall after they've gone dormant. (That's when to do it right?) 8 June 2023 #umbrellamagnolia #advice

@sushiwaitress I would separate them now before they get bigger, more chance of transplant shock the bigger they are. The roots usually run horizontal and they may get bound up in that small pot. I think they will grow better in their own pots 😉 not sure if you've ever done it, but I sprinkle a small handful of oatmeal around the roots and water well. The minerals and vitamins help minimize transplant shock

Left my #umbrellamagnolia #seedlings out in full sun yesterday by accident and they got sunburnt 😟 gave them a drink and put them back in shade this morning. Hang on little guys. 7 Aug 2022 #magnoliatripetala #treesfromseeds #nativetree #gyo #grownfromseed #fromseed #oops #stilllearning

Watered and then #mulched my pot of #umbrellamagnolia #seedlings to keep the water from evaporating in this heat wave. 5 Aug 2022 #magnoliatripetala #treesfromseeds #nativetree #mulch #woodchips #woodchipsoneverything

Up-potted the #umbrellamagnolia #seedlings today. The roots were about 4"-5" long. Hope this was the right move. 31 July 2022 #native #nativeplant #treesfromseeds #nativetree #gyo #grownfromseed #fromseed #magnoliatripetala

Step 3 (not shown) rinse the seeds in a mixture of water & vinegar (a halfhearted attempt to kill any mold that might grow in the fridge). Then wrap in a wet paper towel, label the bag with the date, and stuff into a corner of the fridge. 7 Oct 2021 #seedsaving #experiment #umbrellamagnolia

I don't remember exactly. A few months I think. (Will consult google) I'll probably start them around January when I start my other plants. I'm sure I'll post something about it when it happens. 😉 @gjones

Step 2 of processing #umbrellamagnolia #seeds : let the fruits sit in a cup of water for a few days to get them nice and squishy. Then squeeze them, and then out squirt the seeds. I was so surprised to see they were jet black and #heart shaped. 7 Oct 2021 #heart-shaped

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee #wishlistnomore when I went back to the #bowmanshillwildflowerpreserve to volunteer today, I found that the seed come on the #umbrellamagnolia I'd seen on my previous visit had RIPENED and the seeds were ready! Normally they don't allow visitors to collect seeds from the preserve, but I'd just done a bunch of weeding for them for free so the grounds keeper let me take a few. I took 10 and left the rest for the birds and squirrels that eat them. 2 Oct 2021
