I know nothing of these vegan bedspreads and seek wisdom. What are you growing them in? It looks like that vermiculite fluff, or possibly kitty litter...

@emch Vegan Bedsprings is the best name ever. I ADORE this name you made up. As for soil, I grow these in my lithops mix, which is 80-90% grit and 10-20% coco coir and yes a little vermiculite. I don't know if this is the best soil to grow them in; it's just what I had at the time. They do come from South Africa and an arid climate, and I suspect I might be underwatering them, but this is my first experience with them, so I can't draw any meaningful conclusions.

@emch if I had more grow lights, I'd sow new seeds of these every year. At three years old they're only just now starting to look interesting.

@sushiwaitress I just got some of these. One of them don’t look so hot. Can you give me any specific care instructions/tips/ tricks?? One is looking ok, just pinkish on top. The other is also pinkish on top but a little limp. They’ve been watered and are under grow lights.

Hi April @camilio81 sorry for the late reply. These guys are winter growers so they'll die back in warm weather. They're also desert plants so they need a gritty well-drained soil. I'm a beginner with these so read as much as you can about them on the internet.

@sushiwaitress unfortunately they have gone brown on me. But I am still treating them like my other succulents as far as light/water/soil. Less water maybe. I’m not sure if they’re alive or not honestly lol. If not, it was a lesson! 😂

These seedlings put up one sprout but no other branches. I think their soil is too gritty (Not everything in the world can survive in a lithops environment??), and they probably needed more water. These plants also go dormant in summer, so maaaaaaybe that's what's happening...? We'll see what happens, but I'm not optimistic.

The left half of the pot has only 3 #albuca-concordiana #seedlings Hopefully a couple more will pop up in a while. I didn't realize how hard this is going to be: these are winter-growing bulbs that need a lot of sun and cool weather. Hope I can make my apartment somewhat workable for this. They won't survive a frost so I can't just put them outside. #grownfromseed #fromseed #growyourown #gyo #gyobulbs #advice-needed #advice

The left side of the box is sown with #albuca-concordiana #ornithogalum-concordianum #seeds from Oleg Lagutin from American Hedgehog Nursery. He labeled when the seeds were harvested but the label got wet. I think the seeds are a year or two old. UPDATE: label dried out -- seeds are from April 2017. This is good because these seeds germinate best in the first couple years.

My #diy #seedstarting mini #propagator -- #reused and #recycled -- made of a clear plastic container from walmart that came free with purchase of red grapes and has holes for drainage and ventilation. Plopped that container into another white plastic box to catch any water that drains out, and then wrapped the whole thing in a couple layers of plastic cling-film to keep the moisture in. I couldn't believe this mess would actually work, but had to try anyway.

Every time a seed germinates I'm amazed. These seeds looked like 3mm discs of black construction paper: flat, thin, dry. They're winter-growing bulbs, and I couldn't find a ton of information on how to grow them from seed, but I read that they need cold and humidity, so I sowed them and then put the box in my fridge for two weeks, taking it out during the day and putting it back in at night. And BEHOLD.
