We've had a week of rainy weather and the #fuki have become monsters. There's a little bit of daffodil leaves poking out there at the bottom. 17 May 2024 #petasites #coltsfoot #butterbur #tripplebrookfarm #loveswater

The #fuki bed is decomposing its leaves at this point in the year. It's nearly dormant. I went there today to dig up some roots so I could grow more fuki at the bottom of the hill where I put the ramps. It's a low spot that collects water and produces lots of mosquitoes in the summer. Fuki loves damp soggy places, so hopefully the fuki will soak up the water and solve my mosquito problem. Every time I summon the energy to go outside, I'm rewarded with something new to notice...

Yay! Confirmation that my #fuki not only made it through the winter, but it also successfully pushed up through the layer of straw and wood chips I put down over it last fall. I raked away a bit two weeks ago to see if it was struggling to get through, but saw no sign of it then. 8 Apr 2022 #petasites #coltsfoot #butterbur #perennial #ediblelandscaping #tripplebrookfarm

#fuki did pretty well for its first year. A few nibbles by a few different critters, but the deer pretty much left it alone. Can't wait to see how big it gets next year. #petasites #butterbur #coltsfoot #ediblelandscaping #tripplebrookfarm 3 Sep 2021

I have been fighting weeds in this raised bed all season. It never got mulched so it's been a mess. (Swipe left to see) In a use-what-you-have approach, I've been pulling the weeds and just laying them down on the surface of the soil so they'd dry out and die and maybe become part of the solution.

Other parts of the yard have become overwhelmed with weeds (no photos of that, haha), and my mom and sister came over and we ripped a lot out. After about a week it occurred to me that the pile of dead weeds was basically free mulch that i could use for the raised bed.

I've been trying to adopt #permaculture principles as I deal with the quirks of this land. Baby steps, slowly, I'm a total beginner. This raised bed illustrates two things I've learned so far: (1) the problem is the solution, and (2) don't let organic matter leave your property.

"The problem is the solution" means that the thing that I have an overabundance of, the thing that feels like a problem, it's actually a RESOURCE, and it's an opportunity to change my perspective and look for a creative way to make this annoying thing useful. Lots of embarrassing weeds? Free mulch to solve my weed problem in the raised bed.

Super excited about this #tripplebrookfarm purchase: giant sweet #coltsfoot, also called japanese #butterbur, or #fuki. The stems I'm told are edible, but I'm mainly growing this because it makes huge dramatic leaves, is winter hardy, and doesn't mind wet feet. I ordered one, they sent two in quart size pots. 12 Dec 2020 #petasites

Yes. They sent me an extra strawberry, an extra wild ginger, and an extra fuki. They're not cheap, but they ship good sized plants in 4" pots with soil. My order was $119 including the $15 for shipping. The fuki were in quart pots. Five stars, would order again. @emch
