@rusty it's not really male in particular, it's just what the species is called. It's a comparison to the more delicately cut foliage of the Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina).
Ah. I knew you'd know the answer 👍 I'm going to have to learn a bit more about ferns before deciding where to move mine to. I think they are so varied and would be great in the woodland.
