I'm a novice gardener at 64, I have always plodded along with great difficulty, now because of health issues I find myself in the garden a lot.

I have had this plant for 4/5 years, it started off well but after a couple of years it died off, I don't clear dead plants as quick as I should, looked a couple of weeks later and there was fresh shoots, last year it died again was going to clear the pot out but saw some growth again, one of my mums favourite plants in her time, what am I doing wrong???? Thanks guys

Look up clematis wilt, they normally succumb during the growing season and then come back later. Looking at your pot it could do with repotting, clematis like their roots deep and cool. It may have just outgrown the pot. I've used slate or gravel to top dress before to keep the roots cooler. Hope that helps and good luck!

tash74 thanks for your input, I had heard of clematis wilt but thought it killed them so I will read up on that. I agree with repotting it and I did have slate over the top, I had started to clear the pot and came across some growth so, I'll get reading, repot and put something over the top. Thanks tash74.

When you plant clematis plant 2-3 inches deeper than bought or was potted this will in most cases prevent wilt and your clematis will shoot from the stems below ground and become sturdier as a result 👍👍👍
