Spiraea or honeysuckle or dogwood?
Spirea sounds right to me also
Thank you, @alastairhugli, @franshinegee, and @rennezoe. A few weeks ago, we cut it down (was 4-5ft tall) but didn't get around to digging up the roots. Can't believe we didn't kill it. Maybe we'll leave it till next year and see what it does.
