As a first time Cucumber grower, I just wanted some advice as to how to know when cucumbers are ripe for picking. This one is too large to fit into my hand now & it's growth seems to have slowed down, yet it isn't the typical long supermarket size. Can anyone tell me when to harvest? Thanks in advance 😊👍👍

This heat is incredible, & my cucumbers are all but pleading for water 😕 my carrot seedlings however are all but dead 😢. Oh well, we live and learn. Just an important #tip I thought I'd share is that always water plants at their bases,on the soil, & avoid wetting leaves as much as possible as this encourages disease & water splashing from above throws soil onto the plant leaves, further encouraging illness.
@zylo does that go for flowering plants too?
@wendy50 it goes for most if not all plants, I have yet to find an exception to this rule.

#Yellow cucumber #Bloom 👌
Yay
@charlotte 😊😊
Looking good @zylo. Sadly my cucumbers are in a mood and have stopped growing - all leaves and no cucumbers. 😞
@marymary1 perhaps you over fertilised with nitrogen fertiliser? Or perhaps they need fertiliser?
Yes I think you're right @zylo

#Cucumbers coming along beautifully 😍 #gyo
Wow. Looking great
@charlotte it's the first of my cucumbers, as I'm a first time grower, do you know of any pests or creatures that may threaten my crop & how to defend against them? I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can send my way
Slugs like a nice bit of cucumber. They suckling them like lollipops @zylo 😠
Sucking even.
Try again - suck
@marymary1 thanks for the tip! I'll be using the slug killer in force & try to lift my cucumber off the ground.
I'm afraid my cucumbers were a disaster. This is the first time I have grown them and 3 out of 5 plants have died. Someone on this app suggested the greenhouse was too hot and humid. On the positive side my courgettes are growing like mad.
@charlotte That someone was me! 😁😁 I hope next year will be a better success for you 😕👍👍
Ho Ho. Thanks again then for the advice !!! There is a slim chance one plant might survive. Fingers crossed. I check on it every 15 minutes !!!
@charlotte 😁😁 Make sure you have slug killer out! Those beasts love going for cucumbers 😡

This plant is a gift that keeps on giving, so glad I brought this variety 😊 #gyo
Yay. Very impressive
So many cucumbers....
@charlotte @balrihal Even I was surprised, I think the plant has taken to dropping some though & Delaying the growth of others, as I have seen 2 not in the picture Yellow & die while others are swelling very slowly. Interestingly, this plant has only produced female flowers & I haven't espied a single male upon it, even though the other cucumber plants are producing blooms of both sexes 😮
3 of 5 of my plants have died and I expect the other 2 to die as well. So I reckon yours are doing really well. I will try that variety next year
@charlotte that sounds awful 😯 I have 4 plants, but initially I planted several more, however I just couldn't bring myself to thin out some of the later ones, & that meant that when two of my plants earlier on died, I had backups, even if they were a little root bound & small. Did you ever find a cause for the mysterious deaths?
Never grown them before so don't know what I am doing !! The plants went mouldy/ mildew. Don't know why. Any thoughts ?
@charlotte Im a first time grower too, but That sounds like they were in far too humid an environment, & were too wet. After germination, once the cotyledons emerge, I usually move my seedlings & harden them off asap to the outdoors (as long as frost has passed & tempratures are ideal) because The humid environment that sprouted them can often kill them. Hope that helps! If not, I'm sure there are plenty of Guides online for this sort of problem. ☺ 👍
#advice #tips good luck gardening @charlotte
Thanks. I think that was it. They were in the greenhouse and I have never had a green house before so that is an experiment as well trying to get the correct temperature.
@charlotte Im very glad I could help, I'd also advise you to have a few backup seedlings like I did, so that once the main plants are transplanted into their final location & can be seen to be clearly growing well, you can then thin them out or give them to someone to grow. If the main plants aren't doing so well, then you have reinforcements to keep supplying you with cucumbers 😁😁
Thanks so much for the advice. I feel confident to have another go next year

Another one of my plants from seed, does anyone know when it will bloom? And what about those growths where the leaves meet the stem?
I am growing cucumbers for the first time so I am certainly no expert. But it looks like yours will flower very soon.
@charlotte Thanks for the good news! Hopefully you're right & I shall have cucumbers swelling soon, I wish you good luck for this year too 👍
Any flowers yet ?
@charlotte very nearly now, I looked at them yesterday & they looked ready to open, I think today might be the day, fingers crossed 😊😊

Extra Cucumber seedlings I can't bring myself to get rid of. 😕
Largest one yet! Can't wait to eventually harvest, it's so big it's noticeably slowed the growth of its brilliant mother plant 😁
👍🏻👏🏻🏆
Yay. I have picked my second one just now. It was so heavy I felt the plant sigh with relief
Wow 😳👏👏👏💞
