Okra 'Baby Bubba'

A tall growing plant, if grown in the right conditions, reaching up to 2 meters. The foliage is a bright green and shaped like hearts. It bears large, yellow flowers, similar to the hibiscus. The seed pods are harvested while immature, if grown for the vegetable, as the flowers fade and while the pods are still tender. The pods can be eaten raw or cooked, and the leaves can also be cooked. 'Baby Bubba' is a select variety of Okra which is smaller than others and produces smaller fruits.

Flowering Season

From Mid Summer TO Early Autumn

Abelmoschus esculentus has large yellow flowers with dark purple centre, similar to the hibiscus, through the Summer.

 

Propagation by seed

From Early Spring TO Mid Spring

Soak seeds in tepid water for 24 hours before sowing, to speed up germination. Sow seed in compost and place on a window sill that is in full light in early spring. If sown out in the soil, under glass, wait till mid spring.

 

Planting out

From Late Spring TO Early Summer

Plant out if grown outside when all sign of frost has gone and make sure they are in a sheltered place in full sun, or grow under glass. Plant at least 18" apart, as the plants grow tall. The plants, must be watered once or twice day through hot spells,
