The seed pods are harvested while immature, if grown for the vegetable, as the flowers fade and while the pods are still tender. The pods can be eaten raw or cooked, and the leaves can also be cooked. 'Emerald' bears early, round,smooth, deep-green pods.

Abelmoschus esculentus has large yellow flowers with dark purple centre, similar to the hibiscus, through the Summer.
Propagation by seed
From Early Spring TO Mid Spring
Soak seeds in tepid water for 24 hours before sowing, to speed up germination. Sow seed in compost and place on a window sill that is in full light in early spring. If sown out in the soil, under glass, wait till mid spring.
Planting out
From Late Spring TO Early Summer
