Sweet Forest Abutilon
Abutilon can be grown outdoors in warmer regions, but in temperate zones it is most often grown as a house plant. The common name is derived from their maple-shaped leaves. The blooming season for most Abutilons is from late spring to early summer but they will often flower periodically through the winter as well. The flowers are similar to a cross between a Hibiscus and a Hollyhock. The foliage is usually a pale green, but there are also variegated forms with white or yellow mottling. Sweet Forest Abutilon flowers are butter yellow and open in the afternoon. If planted in full sun Abutilon sonneratianum needs at least some shade at root level from surrounding plants to show at its best.

Planting as a houseplant

If left unrestrained, Abutilon may grow to ten feet in height and spread, so it is important to not provide too large of a planter but it should have good drainage and filled with a quality general purpose houseplant compost. Site it in a well lit position with filtered sunlight and where the daytime temperature is about 70F during the day and about 60F at night.

Plant outdors in spring only in regions where the night temperature does not fall below about 60F. Plant in a moist but will drained soil in a site that offers some proitection from strong winds and in dappled sunlight. Apply a generous layer of well rotted compost into the planting hole and water frequently until established.
