Acalypha pendula

Dwarf Chenille

Acalypha is a tropical plant, grown as a houseplant, or as an annual outdoors in temperate zones. Some varieties are grown for their foliage, which can be multi-coloured, and some are grown for the often brightly-coloured catkin-like flowers. If grown outdoors the plants like full sun or part-shade, and fertile, moist but free-draining soil. Indoors they should be grown in a soil-less, free-draining compost in filtered light. 'Dwarf Chenille Plant' sports furry plumes of tiny red trailing flowers and small, serrated, mid-green leaves. Given enough light, 'Dwarf Chenille' can be in bloom for most of the year. It doesn't need pruning and you don't have to pinch its growing tips to get it to bush

Planting

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

If raising as an indoor plant : for best indoor success, very high humidity should be maintained. Also, spider mites, mealybugs and scale may be a problem when grown indoors. For outdoors : grow in containers or baskets on decks, patios or rooftop gardens. It is a good plant for color and should be used as an accent for both color and texture in a container. Re-pot annually in spring.

Propagation by division

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

For outdoor plants the clumps of rhizomes can be divided once the plant has become fully established. The simplest method is to carefully dig around the clump and gently pull it apart into fist sized pieces and re-plant immediately. For indoor plants, the rhizomes can be pulled apart, and re-planted, when re-potting the plant.

Flowering

From Early Summer TO Early Autumn

Acalypha flower periodically throughout the year, but mainly through the Summer to early Autumn period.
