Allium (Species) Naples Garlic (Cowanii Group)
Allium plants chosen for garden cultivation have terminal umbels of brightly coloured flowers, are hardy and easy to grow. The foliage varies from the rolled-round leaves of garden onions and chives to the broad, oval leaves of wild garlic. Most species have a typical onion smell. Alliums do best in well drained soil, open to the sun. Some dwarf species can be grown as pot plants if kept in a cold greenhouse or frame until nearly in flower. Allium Neapolitanum Cowanii Group is a group of forms with white flowers, with loose heads of tiny white flowers from late Spring to early Summer.

Planting
From Early Autumn TO Mid Autumn
Alliums do best in well drained soil in full sun. Plant smaller types among alpine plants, the others, between low growing shrubs or herbaceous plants. Plant in mid to late autumn covering the bulbs to 3 or 4 times their own depth and leave untouched for several years until the clumps are so thick that flowering is stifled, and then divide the clumps.

Alliums very often produce off-sets - little immature bulbs at the side of the bulb. In Autumn the bulb can be lifted and the offsets gently removed and replanted.
