Arisaema dracontium
Green Dragon
This plant which grows from corms, appears above ground in late spring or early summer. It has erect stems bearing linear, spirally-arranged, dark green leaflets and funnel-shaped white flowers that are striped light green and pink which open before the leaves open fully. Grow in moist but well-drained humus-rich soil in a cool site, although it should not be too dry in summer. 'Green Dragon' has only 1 leaf, but the leaf stem forks so that it lloks as though there are 2 separate leaves, each divided into 5-15 unequal leaflets that are arranged like the an upturned palm of a hand on the tip of the forked stem, which is sometimes 20" or so in length. A separate flower stalk holds the flower- a greenish long-tipped spadix (the dragon’s tongue) that protrudes beyond a narrow green spathe. There are numerous tiny white flowers on the 6" long flower stem, and these are followed by orange-red berries. 'Green Dragon' is relatively rare.

Planting Outdoors
From Late Winter TO Early Spring
Plant container grown plants in deep fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny site, in late winter/early spring. Surrounding the corms and root in a mix of coarse bark, shingle and sharp sand when planting will help to prevent it rotting in a wet climate.
Propagation by seed or offsets
From Late Summer TO Late Autumn
Propagate by seed, sowing them in containers in a cold frame in autumn. Offsets may be removed in late summer
