Dutchman's Pipe
Aristolochia - or Dutchman's Pipe - can be deciduous or evergreen, native to tropical and temperate woodlands. This plant can take 2/3 years to establish and then becomes a vigorous growing, twining vine with large green heart shaped leaves producing green/yellow/purplish old fashioned Meerschaum pipe shaped flowers that are yellow, brown or dark red, sometimes mottled. Needs to be planted by a wall or trellis. Roots and stems are poisonous. 'Aristolochia Sempervirens' is a hardy Dutchmans Pipe. Tiny leaves and miniature, colourful, saxophone-like flowers. It is best scrambling through a shrub (mine grows through a Camellia).
