Tarflower is a woody shrub with a fragrant flower found in the southeastern US. It grows on flatlands in groups. Insects become trapped on its flowers due to the sticky secretions found there, hence the common name. It is evergreen. The simple leaves are alternate. They are elliptic, entire and petiolate. Blooms mid to late spring.

Plant young plants out in full sun to partial shade in late autumn to bloom the following spring. They prefer a moist but well drained soil. They can reach 3m so are best suited to the rear of a sunny border for late spring colour.
