Swede is an abbreviation of Swedish Turnip, and is a hybrid of a turnip and a type of cabbage. These Winter root vegetables are easy to grow and grow well in a cool moist climate, but, as with most brassicas, can suffer from club root. The edible root is round, with a purple top half and cream lower half. They are best harvested when about the size of a cricket ball, preferably after frost. 'Marian' has globe-shaped well-flavoured, fine textured roots and the plants are resistant to both club root and mildew.
