Candelabra Flower in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Brunsvigia orientalis

Candelabra Flower

A large bulbous perennial from which flowers emerge late Summer. The plant takes 6 - 8 years to reach blooming size. The flower-head forms a huge sphere, up to 600mm in diameter, with between 20-80 pink-red flowers, followed by 3-sided seed capsules. When the flower dies, the stem breaks off and the wind blows the dead flower-head along like tumbleweed, which distributes the seeds

Flowering

From Late Summer TO Mid Autumn

The spectacular flowers can appear after around 6 years of growing. The flower emerges from the bare soil in late Summer or early Autumn, before the leaves appear.

Planting

From Mid Spring TO Late Spring

The plant grows naturally in sandy, lowland areas of South Africa. Plant the large bulb in sandy soil, or compost. If growing in a pot, make sure it is large and deep, and the compost is free-draining

Propagating by seed

From Early Winter TO Early Spring

Sow Brunsvigia seeds in deep seed trays as soon as possible after harvesting the seed. Sow in a very well-drained, sandy compost to which some fine compost is added. Press the seeds lightly into the soil, so that the top of the seed remains visible. Water well when first sown, and again only after the first leaves appear. After that, water well once every two to three weeks. When the leaves begin to yellow, stop watering altogether.
