Buxus bonsai

Box Bonsai

Bonsai is ancient tradition of the Japanese for growing miniature trees or shrubs in containers. They are literally just a miniature form of the real thing. They can be shaped and made to look older than their years. Although size, ph, light requirements and frost hardiness have been given here, each of these actually depends on the requirements of the type of tree or shrub grown. Box is a small -leafed shrub, often used for hedging, and has a good branch structure, making it very suitable for bonsai. The leaves are poisonous. It is quite slow-growing. Re-pot every two years or so. Box is an outdoor shrub, so will not mind being in full sun sometimes.

Flowering

From Early Spring TO Mid Summer

Flowering depends on the type of plant grown. Many trees won't flower at all, but azaleas, for example, should flower just the same as a "non bonsai" plant

Planting

From Early Spring TO Mid Spring

The type of growing medium is very important for growing bonsai. It must be water-retentive, free-draining and non-compacting to give good aeration. There are several types that can be bought from bonsai specialists or online. The most important components for a Bonsai growing medium are Akadama, Pumice, Lava rock, organic potting compost and fine gravel (grit).
