Calathea Plants are tropical plants, often grown as houseplants for their beautiful, brightly coloured, upright, oval leaves. There are over 300 different types of Calathea Plants, many being hybrids created by tissue cultures. They are not the easiest of the Marantas to care for. Propagation by division.

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Take divisions from mature plants at re-potting time and plant in a rich compost. Cover pots with polythene and keep warm until new plants are established.

Planting young plants

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

To plant as a houseplant, use a good light porous indoor potting soil that retains water but still drains quickly. African Violet soil works well for Calatheas. Once planted, site in a situation that offers bright, indirect sunlight. In front of an east, west, or north facing window is ideal. Too much direct sun burns the leaves of a Calathea Plant and causes the beautiful leaf colours to fade.
