Calathea Ornata 'Beauty Star'
Calathea 'Beauty Star'
A variety of Calathea ornata, the Calathea ‘Beauty Star' has elegantly shaped green leaves that are stripped in pink, white and silver. These leaves are longer and thinner than a traditional ornata. The underside of each leaf exhibits a deep purple. This is a pet-friendly plant. Like all Calatheas, the ‘Beauty Star' enjoys bright, indirect light and evenly moist soil. These are not undemanding plants, and require consistency with watering and even light to thrive. The orientation of your window defines where to put your plant so it gets medium to bright indirect sunlight. If your window faces North, place your plant between 0 and 1 ft away from it. East or West, put it 1 to 5 ft away. South, place it between 1 to 10 ft away, as sunlight from the South is the strongest.

Propogation by division
From Early Spring TO Late Summer
Take divisions from mature plants at re-potting time and plant in a rich compost. Cover pots with polythene and keep warm until new plants are established.
PLANTING YOUNG PLANTS
From Early Spring TO Late Summer
To plant as a houseplant, use a good light porous indoor potting soil that retains water but still drains quickly. African Violet soil works well for Calatheas. Once planted, site in a situation that offers bright, indirect sunlight. In front of an east, west, or north facing window is ideal. Too much direct sun burns the leaves of a Calathea Plant and causes the beautiful leaf colours to fade.
