Cardiocrinum giganteum syn. Lilium giganteum himalaicum

Cardiocrinum giganteum is a large bulbous perennial which grows tall to around three metres, and has fragrant white trumpet like flowers with red markings in summer and large green leaves. It is monocarpic and will die after flowering, but will produce offsets around the bulb before it does which will grow onto new flowering bulbs in 3-5 years time.

Propagate by Seed

From Early Spring TO Mid Summer

Cardiocrinum giganteum can be propogated by seed, sown fresh and shallow in deep pots to allow roots to develop with a potting compost mix and grit to improve drainage. Seed generally takes around 7 years to produce flowering plants. Do not provide too much artificial heat, and keep in a shady protected position where seeds should start to germinate. Sometimes may need a winter period before germination takes place, but as an alternatively, stratify the seeds for a 4-6 week period in the fridge before placing back in normal temperatures to encourage germination.

Flowering Season

From Mid Summer TO Late Summer

Cardiocrinum giganteum produces flowers on a central flowering stem reaching 6-10ft tall from early summer and last for 4-6 weeks.

Planting Bulbs in Spring

From Early Spring TO Late Spring

Plant bulbs of Cardiocrinum giganteum in the spring in a sheltered woodland position in shade. Ensure the crown of the bulb is set level with the soil surface. This plant prefers a rich humus soil as typically found in a woodland environment. Do not plant in full sun.
