Carum carvi
Caraway
Carum carvi - caraway - is an herbaceous biennial that will, in its second year, mature to 30" tall. The plant is only about 8" tall in the first year. It has carrot-like foliage and a long taproot. In its second year, the plant will triple in size and the stems will get stouter, and the foliage more feathery. Umbels of small white flowers appear in mid Spring until the end of Summer, followed by small hard brown seeds– the caraway spice. The plant prefers a cool-climate, and does not do well in hot, dry climates

Flowering
From Mid Spring TO Late Summer
Umbels of small white flowers appear in mid to late Spring, lasting all Summer
Planting
From Early Spring TO Late Spring
Plant in a sunny position in free-draining soil. Plants do not transplant well, as like all plants in the carrot family, they have tap-roots, so they need to be sown in situ.
Propagating by seed
From Early Spring TO Late Spring
Caraway can be grown from seed sown 1/2" deep in free-draining soil in a sunny position. The seedlings should then be thinned out to around 8" - 12"
