Cedar of Lebanon in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Cedrus Libani

Cedar of Lebanon

Cedar of Lebanon is a large evergreen conifer, commonly seen in a classic English estate or stately home. It will grow on almost any well drained soil, should be planted in full sun and allowed plenty of space for it to reach its full potential. It is a magestic specimen tree with a conical shape when young and gains a flatter top with age. These are very large trees that can reach over 30m tall and is thus suited to large gardens and parks. It produces large cones which are aromatic and sit atop the stems. Male cones are barrel shaped and the female slightly rounder.

Planting young plants

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Not a particularly fussy tree it will survive almost anyywhere, though like a lot of conifers it will not do well on very wet ground. It does need space however and is not suited to small gardens. Nor should it be planted within 30 meters of buildings or underground service pipes. It is prone to losing some needles when planted, though these will grow them back within a year.
