Croton Franklin Roosevelt in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Codiaeum variegatum 'Franklin Roosevelt'

Croton 'Franklin Roosevelt'

The croton has leathery leaves in green, pink, red, yellow and orange. Often, one single plant can have leaves with different colours. Colours can change as the plant ages. Requiring a minimum of 4 hours of direct sun each day, it is a plant that can be difficult to grow and keep healthy. The soil should be evenly moist and the plant protected from drafts or overly warm temperatures. The leaves will drop if the soil is too dry or too wet. These are plants which only survive outdoors where temperatures do not normally drop below 10°C in winter. In colder climates, the plants are grown in greenhouses or as house plants. 'Franklin Roosevelt' has red-backed green leaves splashed with yellow, orange and pink over medium green leaves with red backs. The oldest leaves are more burgundy coloured.

Propagation by cuttings

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Take stem cuttings in spring and dip in rooting hormone before inserting in a half-half mix of sand and peat moss. Croton cuttings root in about a month.

Planting

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Whether Crotons are planted out or potted as houseplants, they will require bright light and at least 3 hours of direct sun each day. They will do best in warm climates 65-85°F/18-29°C. A moist and well drained soil is ideal.
