Colquhounia coccinea
Scarlet-flowered Colquhounia
Colquhounia coccinea is a herbaceous perennial which is semi-evergreen (or evergreen in slightly warmer climates). It has aromatic soft downy silvery green leaves and can grow to about 2.5-3 metres tall. Originally from the Himalayan region and western China, this shrub likes full sun in well drained soil. Protect from dry winds. In summer, orange-scarlet tubular flowers appear. In cold winters, foliage can die back but will usually start to regrow in spring.

Flowering
From Mid Summer TO Early Autumn
Terminal spires of flowers appear in mid to late Summer into early Autumn
Planting
From Early Spring TO Mid Spring
Plant in a sheltered site in full sun, into moderately fertile free-draining soil.
Propagating by cuttings
From Mid Spring TO Early Summer
Take softwood cuttings from new growth early in the day in Spring or early Summer. Cut, neatly, a 4" approx. piece of a non-flowering shoot, pinch out the tip, and cut off the bottom leaves. Dip the bottom of the cutting in hormone rooting powder, and carefully place in a pot of cutting compost with the leaves just above the level of the compost. Water, label, cover with a polythene bag, and place in a warm, bright place, out of direct sunlight. Take the polythene bag off periodically for a while for ventilation (at least twice a week)
