Considered a weed in many parts of the world, this plant is a native of East Asia. It is almost succulent in appearance as it has thick watery stems with nodes from which new branches and leaves grow, and small flowers consisting of two mouse-ear-shaped upright sky-blue petals and one bear-like lower petal. The flowers, as its common name suggests, last only a day - by mid-day of the day a flower blooms it turns to a jelly-like substance. Spreads along the ground as stems root as they grow horizontally. The flowers appear from mid Summer to early Autumn. 'Sleeping Beauty' has vivid blue flowers with 3 petals (two upper and one lower) from early Summer right through to first frost

Propagating by seed
From Early Spring TO Mid Spring
Sow seed in mid Spring in a greenhouse. The seed usually germinates in 4 - 5 weeks at 20°C [164]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots to plant out in late Spring or early Summer, after last frost.

Harden the seedlings off in late Spring or early Summer by getting them used to outdoor conditions, putting the pots outdoors during the day for several days, gradually extending the time they are outside.
