Japanese Cedar Rasen in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Cryptomeria japonica 'Rasen'

Japanese Cedar 'Rasen'

Cryptomeria are large evergreen trees with attractive red-brown bark and dense foliage consisting of short awl-shaped leaves arranged spirally around the branchlets; cones are spherical. 'Rasen' is a very interesting form of Cryptomeria with an unusual twisted habit, the needles literally twisting round the stem, the stems twist from the trunk and the trunk in turn is also twisted.

Planting young plants

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

Can be grown in a container or planted into the garden in any moist and water retentive soil with a high organic content. Requires a sheltered position, protected from strong winds, in dappled sun or partial shade. For container growing, place in a protected site, preferably with light dappled shade. For garden growing, plant in flower borders and beds or rock gardens.
