Carrot 'Rainbow'
Daucus carota supsp. sativus is the garden carrot. Carrots are root vegetables and originate from Persia. They produce feathery green foliage, and develop an edible taproot. They are usually orange in colour, however other cultivars now produce carrots of different colours such as purple, black, red, white, and yellow. As with most types of vegetables there three main types - early, intermediate and main crop. By selecting each of the varieties, carrots can be available most of the year. Carrots are best planted in light, stone-free soil that was not manured the previous year, or the roots will fork. 'Rainbow' produces a mix of thin tapered carrots of varying colours of orange, yellow and white.

Propagation by seed
From Late Winter TO Mid Summer
Before sowing carrots, dig the soil to a fine tilth, breaking up any large lumps and removing any stones.. Make drills to a depth of 1cm (½in), leaving about 30cm (12in) between each drill. Sprinkle carrot seed thinly along the drill. Cover the seeds with soil, and water well with a fine-rose watering-can. Keep the soil moist until germination, about 10-20 days. Sow in succession for continuous cropping, from late Winter under cloches, or early Spring in open ground.
