New Zealand Tree Fern in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Dicksonia squarrosa

New Zealand Tree Fern

This is an evergreen in warmer areas but its leaves are likely to die if hit by frost in colder places. The red/brown trunk is rough to touch as it covered in fibres. The fonds are a dark green in colour and unfurl the same as all fern species. In areas prone to hard frost, it is wise to protect the trunk and crown with straw over winter. This species has a fast growth rate of up to 80cm a year, and can reach 6m tall.

Planting Outdoors early

From Early Spring TO Early Spring

An ideal tree-fern for a shady greenhouse or conservatory where trunk can be kept moist. Plant container grown specimens outdoors only in milder climates in a humus rich, moist but well drained soil. In colder climates, winter protection will be required.
