Dracaena compacta

Lotus Bamboo

Lotus bamboo is also known as rose bamboo or flower bamboo. It is so named because its leaf bracts resemble lotus flowers. Maintain the stems in a vase with 2 inches of clean water and a few squirts of Green Green fertilizer. Care for lotus bamboo is very similar to lucky bamboo except that it likes slightly more light and fertilizer.

Planting as a houseplant

From Late Summer TO Early Spring

Most well draining potting soil mix types are fine to use. Temperatures from 60°F (15°C) - 75°F (24°C) are ideal. Under 55°F/12°C is going to harm the plant which may become noticeable if the leaves begin curling. Try and avoid the plant being near cold drafts, which will also cause harm. A good mix of sun shine and shade is ideal for this dracaena, but hardly any direct sunlight. Although it grows quicker and better in bright light you'll also find it survives and grows well enough in low light conditions.

Propagation

From Early Spring TO Late Summer

New Lucky Bamboo can be created through vegetative propagation. Begin by finding a node – the raised rings that grow around the stalk – make a cut about an inch above the node. You will now have a top and a bottom. Leave the bottom in the original container. The bottom will have no leaves and after a few days will need to be lightly misted every few days to encourage new growth. The tops will have all of the leaves. Take the top and dip the cut end in rooting hormone. Let it dry overnight before placing the top in the original container or a new container.
