Galium aparine is a annual growing to 1.2 m. It has creeping stems which branch and grow along the ground and over other plants. They attach themselves with small hooked hairs. The stems can reach up to 1m in length. Star-shaped, white to greenish flowers, which emerge from early spring to summer. The plant produces fruits which are burrs which contain seeds clustered together. The burrs are covered with hooked hairs which cling to animal fur, aiding in seed dispersal.
