Gentiana - gentians - are alpine plants that can be annuals, biennials, herbaceous or evergreen perennials. They have showy blue, usually trumpet-shaped flowers.The spring gentian (Gentiana verna) is a small species, normally only growing to a height of a few centimetres. Found on sunny alpine meadows and moorland throughout Eurasia. Its scarcity has led to protection in a number of European countries as an endangered species.

Propagating by offsets

Offsets are the baby plants that form at the base of some bulbs, and they are an easy way to propagate a plant. When the offsets have grown large enough to handle - and, hopefully, have some roots of their own,- gently break them away from the mother plant.
